Seasonal Job Opportunities on the Appalachian Trail in Maine: 

Appalachian Trail Ridgerunners stationed at Gulf Hagas, Saddleback and Bigelow Mountains (May 18 to October 20) will: meet, greet, register and educate hikers on the Appalachian Trail. They will impart Leave No Trace knowledge, skills and ethics focusing on youth groups and long distance backpackers, for example: where to camp, how to protect water sources, minimize fire impacts. Ridgerunners will provide education about rare alpine plants and stewardship on summits and ridgelines. They will manage and provide light maintenance at campsites. Some backpacking and camping gear will be provided, as well as off day housing assistance. Qualifications: Leave No Trace knowledge, skills and ethics; desire and comfort with primitive, solitary, outdoor living and working conditions.; good health and physical fitness; public/customer service skills; professional appearance and attitude; good communication skills (oral, by phone, and written); willingness to work in unfavorable weather conditions; and long-distance hiking experience Personal transportation is required to get to assigned trailhead. .

Maine Trail Crew Opportunities! All trail Crew employees, interns and volunteers will receive group housing and meals.

normal'> normal'>The Maine Trail Crew Field Coordinator - April 1 - Sept. 28 -  $19.50/hour, will coordinate multiple trail crews working on the Appalachian Trail in Maine.  Duties include making plans for the summer season, teaching trail skills to program staff and volunteers, joining the crews on the trail, making inventories of trail conditions, submitting reports, and maintaining housing facilities/equipment. Qualifications: two or more seasons working on New England trails; experience with outdoor leadership; ability to monitor progress, quality and quantity of the trail work being done by two crews in different locations; experience in the field with GPS – will train if necessary; familiar with computers, Excel spreadsheets and MS Word; ability to teach trail skills including building stone structures and using rigging equipment; ability to hike long distances in mountain terrain; valid driver's license and clean driving record; ability to maintain safety standards, motivate and work with people of all ages and backgrounds; and comfortable working without direct supervision. normal'> normal'>Maine Trail Crew Opportunities-  from May 18 - August 24 normal'> 

Trail Crew Leaders and Assistant Leaders: Crew Leaders ($16.50/hour) and Assistant Leaders ($12/hour) will lead volunteer trail crews at remote sites on the Appalachian Trail. Projects include building stone steps, waterbars and retaining walls, and re-locations.  Activities focus on quality trail building, teamwork and learning opportunities for volunteers.  Advanced training with stone cutting, stone work, rigging systems and other trail work will be presented as well as training with first aid and leadership techniques. Qualifications: experience with trail work and outdoor leadership, willingness to take responsibility for of all aspects of a trail crew; back country camping skills; willingness to maintain records and take photos of each week’s project ; previous experience building stone structures; good health and physical fitness; valid driver's license and clean driving record; ability to maintain a safe and enjoyable work environment under challenging conditions; ability to teach, motivate and work with people of all ages and backgrounds; and comfortable working without direct supervision.

Maine Trail Crew Camp Coordinator ($16.50/hour) will support the operation of two trail crews by: planning and preparing meals, purchasing food, maintaining the base camp facility, recruiting volunteers, assisting with transportation, arranging leisure time opportunities, and participating at job sites on a limited basis. Qualifications: one season working in food service; one season working in an outdoor recreation setting; valid driver's license, clean driving record and personal vehicle; effective communications skills; ability to maintain accurate records and petty cash; and ability to work with people of all ages and backgrounds

Interns ($200/week) will help rebuild and restore heavily impacted sections of the Appalachian Trail. Interns will utilize Griphoist® rigging equipment and hand tools to build stone steps, waterbars and retaining walls.  They will camp in remote, rugged and stunning beautiful parts of the Appalachian Trail. Qualifications: desire to live and work in the outdoors; interest in building a career in the trails and conservation; ability to teach skills and support volunteer workers; good health and physical fitness; valid driver's license and clean driving record.
