Job Description & Requirements

The Trail Technicians on the Management Teams will perform a wide variety of forest management related tasks including but not limited to: maintaining trails, restoring damaged areas, closing and restoring social trails, contacting and interacting with hikers to educate and inform them about regulations, installing signs and posting updated restrictions, and leading volunteers. $16-20/hr depending on experience. POSITION DUTIES

Roles and Responsibilities

Trail Maintenance/Restoration

Implement trail maintenance and restoration projects at high altitude (11-14,000+ feet); extensive rock work and restoration work including rock steps and walls, alpine tundra stabilization, and re-vegetation

Hike 2-8 miles per day at altitude, using heavy hand tools and contributing as part of a team

Identify project challenges and pro-actively prescribe solutions

Clear trail corridors using primitive tools such as cross cut saws and axes

Education/Outreach

Educate self in alpine ecology and Leave No Trace principles

Contacting hikers/climbers on-mountain and presenting information about Leave No Trace and CFI

Communicate USFS regulations and management strategies to visitors

General Position Duties

Project planning and management: Determine human resources and equipment/materials needed to accomplish projects; set regular project completion goals; oversee project logistics (travel planning, tool preparation, food re-stocks, lining out project work sections); materials planning; health and safety; and interaction with the public

Occasionally lead volunteer groups during CFI volunteer projects, ensuring a safe, quality, and productive experience

Photograph worksites before, during and after work is performed to document on-the-ground work accomplishments.

Update the CFI project blog site on a regular basis 

Compile detailed project reports during and after the project season

Compile all project receipts and provide detailed financial reports on a schedule set by CFI’s Controller

Other tasks as assigned to contribute to the overall implementation and operations of CFI’s projects

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Trailwork experience – maintaining and/or constructing natural-surface trails.  Minimum 1-2 seasons of trailwork experience preferred.  Rockwork (steps, walls, etc.) experience desirable.

Excellent physical condition

Positive, professional attitude

Strong interpersonal and communication skills in a group setting

Passion about the outdoors and a strong conservation ethic

Willingness and ability to live and perform strenuous work at high altitude in a backcountry environment for up to 10 days at a time

Proficient in travelling and living in mountain backcountry environments and in outdoor skills (i.e. backpacking, camping, hiking)

Ability and desire to lead volunteers on trail project work

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Pro-active in establishing and completing goals, and attention to detail
