Sea Kayak Guide

 

General Statement:

This seasonal position is the leader of all guided trips and is responsible for the safety of all customers and individuals on the trip, especially while on the water.   Vital qualities for this position include excellent personal skills, organizational skills, and leadership ability.

This position works closely with the general public and the rest of the Trek & Trail staff.  Must be a team player and maintain a cooperative and can-do attitude and relationships.  Necessary skills also include possessing oral communication experience, above average problem-solving ability, and historic and geologic knowledge of the area.  Kayak Guides are expected to be experienced sea kayakers and understand sea kayak rescue procedures, and be knowledgeable of local weather conditions and hazards. 

Essential Functions and Related Tasks:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1)                  Provide a high level of customer service at all times.  Project and maintain a positive image on behalf of the Trek & Trail during the course of performing the duties of the position.

2)         Exceptional level of self-motivation is required for this position.  Position requires a high level of common sense and ability to make judgment calls in the field.


3)         Daily tasks include leading kayak trips, assisting with loading boats, equipment, and food for trips, assisting with driving shuttles for customers, assisting with inspection of boats and equipment, making sure appropriate paperwork is completed, making sure park rules are followed by all on guided trips, leading/assisting in emergency situations. 

4)         Ability to:

=         Communicate and work effectively with customers, the general public, and staff

=         Work independently and effectively in the course of carrying out assigned duties

=         Work cooperatively with other employees, vendors, and agencies

=         Carry out written and verbal orders efficiently and completely with minimal supervision

=         Instruct customers how to operate all equipment with care to insure the preservation of equipment, prevent injury to other employees and the general public, and prevent property damage

5)                  Perform related duties as necessary and assigned

Qualifications:

A)                Must be capable of carrying out tasks efficiently and productively in absence of supervision

B)                Excellent personal/instruction skills

C)                Knowledge of local history and geology

D)                Must have, and maintain as a condition of employment, a safe driving record

E)                 Must have, and maintain as a condition of employment, access to dependable transportation

F)                 Must have, and maintain as a condition of employment, a current Basic First Aid and CPR/AED certification for both adult and child

Physical Requirements in Performing Tasks Listed:

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings.  The Kayak Guide will be frequently required to sit, stand, and kneel for extended period of time, paddle for at least three hours without a break, walk over rough or uneven surfaces, work in unpleasant surroundings, talk, hear, navigate stairs, and lift heavy objects such as kayaks over 50 pounds, sometimes unassisted. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work frequently with a motor vehicle, hand tools, work in outdoor settings.  Lighting and noise levels will vary from and from day to day.  The outdoor settings will present various types of weather conditions.  The employee will be exposed to hot and cold temperatures, precipitation, fumes from paints and epoxies, gasoline and fuels, and cleaning supplies; vehicle exhaust, campfires, insects, wildlife, etc.  The employee will be exposed to allergens and unpleasant conditions.
