Job Description & Requirements
The Role The Sawtooth Society's Project Leaders manage and supervise volunteer conservation crews comprised of both youth and adult groups over the course of a four-month field season (June through September). Project Leaders will generally work following a spike schedule of five-day hitches (Wednesday-Sunday, 8 to 9 hours per day), followed by two days off (Monday-Tuesday) before the next hitch. During the program, Project Leaders will be responsible for leading their crew of volunteers in carrying out a variety of hands-on, conservation-oriented projects on public lands, such as trail maintenance or construction, recreational facility maintenance, forestry management, among others.
The projects are located within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, in south central Idaho, in most cases immediately adjacent to, or within, designated wilderness boundaries. For some projects, hitches will involve backpacking, being completely self-sufficient in remote locations for days at a time, carrying all your necessary camping equipment, tools and safety gear (tools & safety gear provided by the Sawtooth Society). Shared USFS housing will be available for rent from June to September for a total $576 per employee.
