Job Description & Requirements

The Executive Director is the key management leader of the Durango Nordic Ski Club (DNSC), a 501(c)3 organization. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing and managing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors. A primary goal of the position is to support the financial sustainability of the organization, including the funding for this position. Initially, the position will be part-time (~¾ time) with the potential to become full-time based on achieving financial milestones.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

BOARD GOVERNANCE AND ENGAGEMENT

  • Lead DNSC in a manner that supports the organization’s mission.

  • Communicate effectively with the Board and provide all information necessary for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions.

  • Work closely with the Board on policy, fundraising, community outreach and strategic planning.

FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE AND VITALITY

  • Lead fundraising and develop other revenue necessary to support DNSC’s mission and to ensure the financial health of the organization.

  • Perform budgeting and fiscal management to maximize resource utilization and financial sustainability of the organization.

ORGANIZATION OPERATIONS

  • Implement programs that carry out the organization’s mission and strategy.

  • Facilitate a positive culture and community environment.

  • Oversee and implement resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate, such as staffing, volunteers, equipment, technology systems, etc.

  • Supervise direct reports, (e.g, Center Director, Head Coach and Program Director) including compensation, contract renewals, goal setting, coaching and annual reviews.

  • Plan, organize and direct the organization’s operations and programs.

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Manage marketing communications including the editorial calendar, website, newsletters, social media, press releases, annual report, etc.

  • Manage brand consistency following DNSC Brand Guidelines.

  • Prepare content with exceptional writing and editing skills.

  • Serve as DNSC’s primary spokesperson.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10 or more years of leadership and management experience or supervisory experience.

  • Five or more years of nonprofit management experience.

  • Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.

  • High level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers and donors.

  • Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers and the overall community.

  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.

  • Successful fundraising experience.

  • Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers.

  • Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.

  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy, integrity and leadership.

  • Technical aptitude to manage supporting information technology systems.

The Durango Nordic Ski Club, founded in 1952, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides individuals of all ages and abilities the opportunity to learn, enjoy, and improve in the sports of Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. We maintain over 20 kilometers of groomed trails and offer complete ski and snowshoe rental packages as well as private lessons, clinics, a growing masters program, as well as several youth programs.
