Job Description: General Manager

The Alaska Rock Gym is seeking a qualified individual to lead its organization as General Manager. Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the successful applicant will be responsible for the management and support of all departments, ensuring the gym functions smoothly on all levels and that the core values of the organization are sustained. The General Manager will also collaborate with department managers to promote safety and sustainability in all gym operations and is responsible for continuing the Alaska Rock Gym’s deep dedication to excellence in customer service.
The ideal candidate will have a balance of great leadership skills, strong administrative abilities and be a creative, strategic thinker. The capability to manage a high performing team in a fast-paced environment and the ability to see the big picture as well as the everyday details are essential to the job.
The Alaska Rock Gym, founded in 1995, has created a strong and active presence within the climbing and fitness communities in Anchorage. In August of 2016, the gym relocated to a newly constructed, state of the art facility with over 20,000 square feet of climbing surface. The business is dedicated to continuing its tradition of providing great indoor climbing, strong youth programs, and innovative adult climbing and fitness opportunities to the recreational community of Anchorage and southcentral Alaska.
Essential Duties
· Provide leadership and direction to the management team and by extension all staff, that is in alignment with the gym’s mission, vision, and values.
· Recruit, hire, develop and mentor a service-oriented, collaborative team of department managers, leads and operational staff.
· Oversee all facility operations including maintenance, janitorial, route setting, retail sales, youth and adult programming, risk management, fitness and yoga, and community events.
· Create and implement processes, protocols, and procedures to ensure the gym runs in an effective and service-oriented manner while meeting financial goals.
· Oversee the organization’s social media presence, manage all public communications, and direct the annual advertising plan for the gym.
· Participate with the Board of Directors in annual financial planning and the creation of an operating budget.
· Provide oversight of the accounting department and its functions including payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
· Ensure the management team is supported and through them that the gym runs smoothly: administrative needs are met, staff members are well-trained, the route setting department is supported, and members’ and guests’ gym experiences are positive.
· Work proactively to build strong relationships in the community to drive membership growth and retention.
Qualifications & Requirements
· Experience in running a fast-paced, high-volume business, with a large, multi-departmental team.
· Knowledge of climbing gym operations, including retail, route setting, programming, and facility management.
· Knowledge of the risk management industry, and the ability to formulate, promote and monitor risk management protocols within the facility.
· Excellent communication skills and strong customer service abilities.
· Ability to embody the mission, vision, and values of the organization and through this ability foster and promote this culture in the management team and staff.
· Ability to build a strong community among department managers and staff, hold them accountable to performance expectations, and develop future leaders.
· Ability to work independently, juggle competing priorities, solve problems and handle difficult situations with sound judgment.
· Proficient in organizational tools such as Excel, QuickBooks Pro, MS Office, and the ability to learn gym-industry software such as Rock Gym Pro.
· Ability to work with the BOD on creation of an annual operating budget, then manage operations to comply with the budget.
· Availability to work a daytime, weekday work schedule, largely from the gym. Some evening and weekend presence required. Ability to flex schedule around gym events and needs.
· Strong background in climbing preferred but not required. Desire to learn and climb/workout in the gym on a regular basis is a must.
Additional Information
Full-time, salary position: The starting annual salary for this position will range from $80,000 to $100,000, depending on qualifications, skills, and experience.
