Mt. Eyak Ski Area Manager

Department: Administration                                                                                                   Reports To: SAA President

Supervises: All Ski Area Management & Volunteer Staff                              Approved By: SAA Board of Directors

Salary: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 annually, depending on experience

Job Type: Full-Time, Year-Round, 40 hours per week, 2,080 hours per year

FLSA Classifications: Exempt

Benefits: 80 hours paid annual leave plus 9 paid holidays  

Basic Function:  The Mt. Eyak Ski Area Manager (Manager) is a Sheridan Alpine Association (SAA) employee that performs the functional role of the Manager.  The Manager has two basic functions: 1) to serve as the full-charge working manager of the Mt. Eyak Ski Area responsible for all operational aspects requiring management level decision making capability on a 24-hour basis, including: construction, daily operations, and personnel; and 2) to work on a daily basis with SAA President and Treasurer to carry out the directives of the SAA.     

Primary Responsibilities: The Manager ensures the efficient safe operation and administration of the Mt. Eyak Ski Area.  The Manager provides leadership, management, and direction for all winter, spring, summer and fall operations at the Mt. Eyak Ski Area.  The Manager oversees and directs ongoing services and operations for all departments at the ski area, including Ski Patrol/Snow Safety, Snowsports School, Grooming, Snowmaking, Lifts, Food Services, Ticket Sales, Rental Gear, and ski area events.

This role is directly responsible to ensure the overall success of the business associated with the following areas; accountability for executing daily mountain operations, updating and implementing future and strategic planning, reporting of operations, employee hiring and performance, staff development, financial results which include expense and labor management in accordance with budget requirements, and compliance with all governmental regulations ensuring that safety is paramount across our year-round operations for both staff and guests.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Manages and oversees all activities, operations, and services of the ski area operations departments.

·         Preparation of an operational plan and an overall operating budget for the ski area to be submitted to the Board of Directors for approval.

·         Selects, directly supervises, and develops department heads to ensure goals are being met.

·         Develop and maintain professional relationships and represent the organization to outside vendors, contractors, business and community groups, as well as local, state, and federal government agencies.

·         Responsible for the operational decisions regarding opening/closing lifts, terrain, and trails in conjunction with Ski Patrol/Snow Safety personnel.

·         Directs and oversees ski area planning and operations, prioritizing both short-term and long-term capital construction and maintenance projects.

·         Prepares and maintains any necessary permits.

·         Works with department heads to recruit, hire, and inspire a safety-focused staff with excellent guest services, and efficient maintenance.

·         Exercises judgment in accordance with SAA policies and procedures.

·         Acts as the face and voice of Mt. Eyak Ski Area within the community.

·         Must have the ability to interact at any time with guests and other employees in a pleasant manner and maintain good working relationships with others and all department heads and employees.

·         Maintains a positive, productive, and solution-oriented relationship with department heads, SAA President, Treasurer, and Board of Directors.

·         All other job duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications or equivalent:

·         Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field.

·         Experience in management, personnel management, or equivalent combination of education/experience.

·         Requires the ability to communicate clearly and precisely in a variety of significant situations (such as training, explaining, giving directions, etc.).

·         Requires the ability to communicate in writing on complex or ambiguous subjects.

·         Requires proficient conceptual and/or creative skills.

·         Requires the ability to interact with guests and customers of the ski area in a friendly and accommodating manner.

·         Ability to make independent decisions in real time which may affect policies or procedures at the Mt. Eyak Ski Area.

·         Experience in record maintenance and keeping.

·         Proficient in computer applications such as Google Sheets, Docs, etc.

·         Experience in operation of basic office equipment (computer, telephone, copier, etc.).

·         Experience in formulating/implementing, reviewing, and maintaining work and workplace safety rules, standards, and procedures within established guidelines and expectations.          

·         Experience in scheduling, coordinating, solving personnel issues (recruiting, employment, retention, discipline, promotion, etc.).

 Licenses/Certificates:  Valid driver’s license.

About Sheridan Alpine Association

Mt. Eyak Ski Area offers alpine skiing and snowboarding on Mt. Eyak above the town of Cordova, Alaska.  Mt. Eyak uses an historic 1939 American Steel and Wire single chair lift, as well as a rope tow on the beginner slope.  The base elevation is 400 feet, rising to 1200 feet at the top of the single lift, for a vertical drop of 800 feet.  The annual snowfall averages 350".  With approximately 30 different trail options, including a new easy trail down the hill, the area offers something for everyone!
